Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Treats Spasticity

Baclofen is a medication used to treat patients who suffer spasticity and pain secondary to spastic spasm. An Intrathecal Baclofen Pump (IBP) may help patients with severe spasticity on high doses of baclofen who do not obtain satisfactory symptom relief.

An intrathecal pump that dispenses baclofen is implanted into the spine. The benefits of using an intrathecal pump is: (1) less medication (baclofen) is needed to produce favorable symptom relief and (2) medication side effects are less.

Am I a candidate?

If Dr. Chapman recommends the baclofen pump, the first step is a trial use of the technology. The trial involves a spinal injection through a small needle of medication into the spine. If symptoms are well-relieved, the next step is to consider implantation of the pump.
