Hip Joint Anatomy
The hip joint is a ball and socket joint located where the thigh bone meets the pelvis. The top of the thigh bone (femur) is a round ball that fits into the socket formed by a cavity in the pelvic bone. Ligaments form a capsule around the joint that holds the ball in the socket. The capsule contains synovial fluid that lubricates the joint. The bony joint surfaces are coated with cartilage important to friction-free movement.
